Parashat B’Shalach: Complaining During the Miracle One of the most incredible texts I have ever encountered explores a verse from this parashah, describing the Splitting of the Red Sea. Amid this extraordinary, miraculous event, the Midrash reveals a conversation between two Jews, Reuven and Shimon. As they traversed the seabed, they remarked, "In Egypt, we were immersed in mortar, and here we are still surrounded by mortar. In Egypt we had the mortar that accompanied the bricks and here at the Red Sea we have the mud caused by the splitting waters." Reuben questioned the difference between their past bondage and their current situation. Amidst the miracle, all he could perceive was mud and dirt; to him, mortar was mortar, this time, in a new place. His perspective was clouded, pre...

Baltimore, MD - Feb. 4, 2025 - A first-of-its-kind study testing the blood of Maryland residents for toxic forever chemicals found every participant had it in their blood — with nearly all of them at risk for health problems due to their levels of PFAS contamination. Johns Hopkins University and the Maryland Pesticide Education Network collaborated for the study, which was obtained by 11 News Investigates before its publishing date, testing 41 volunteers from across the state during the fall. Dr. Ana Rule, assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, told 11 News Investigates that even with the study's small sample size, it's clear "that most people in Maryland have this in their blood." The study's average result was 10.4. The ...
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 4, 2025 - Maryland, like many other states, is working to establish a new transportation funding source as revenues from the fuel tax continue to decline. The fuel tax is the largest source of revenue to fund state transportation projects, but over time, it's been impacted by improved fuel economy, increased ownership in electric and hybrid vehicles, and changes in driver behavior. To get in front of this budget shortfall, Maryland turned to the Eastern Transportation Coalition to learn more about an alternative. It’s called a mileage-based user fee (MBUF). “So, we did a four-month demonstration pilot in Maryland, and Maryland is one of eight states right now along the East Coast that's trying to explore what would happen if we replace the fuel ...
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 3, 2025 - I’ve heard from many of you about the significant increase in your BGE bills, and I understand how challenging this is for everyone. Unfortunately, this rise is impacting many of us. I’m now serving on a committee that oversees energy legislation, and I’m working closely with my colleagues to address this issue. While it’s not an overnight fix, our office has been in direct communication with BGE to discuss concerns with the rising bills we have seen this winter. BGE is taking several steps to help customers manage their bills and maintain service during the winter months:- Waiving late payment fees for January and February 2025.- Suspending disconnections for nonpayment in February 2025. - Streamlining the process to get any customers...
Baltimore, MD - Feb. 3, 2025 - The city of Baltimore filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration late Monday, joining a group of organizations challenging a sweeping executive order that rescinded federal funding for diversity, equity and inclusion programs. The lawsuit claims that the city has been left with a “quandary”: It relies on hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants, many of which could be at risk under the executive order.“The uncertainty of federal funding leaves the city wondering whether it needs to start reallocating resources—and likely reduce support for other programs—just to sustain its critical municipal functions," the complaint reads.Read more at The Baltimore Banner
Washington, D.C. - Feb. 3, 2025 - The Department of Education announced Monday an investigation into five universities over reports of “widespread antisemitic harassment” in the aftermath of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israelis. The five universities are Columbia, Northwestern, Portland State, the University of California Berkeley, and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. “Too many universities have tolerated widespread antisemitic harassment and the illegal encampments that paralyzed campus life last year, driving Jewish life and religious expression underground,” said Craig Trainor, the department’s acting assistant secretary for civil rights. Today, the Department is putting universities, colleges, and K-12 s...

Mexican drug cartels are ordering their members to attack US Border Patrol agents with kamikaze drones and other explosives in a desperate bid to thwart the crackdown at the border, according to an internal memo obtained by The Post. The alert, which cites social media posts and other sources, cautions federal agents “to remain cognizant of their surroundings at all times” in the face of the new threat. “On February 1, 2025, the El Paso Sector Intelligence and Operations Center (EPT-IOC) received information advising that Mexican cartel leaders have authorized the deployment of drones equipped with explosives to be used against US Border Patrol agents and US military personal currently working along the border with Mexico,” the internal memo titled “Officer ...
US President Donald Trump on Monday afternoon will issue an executive order to withdraw the US from the United Nations Human Rights Council, and end funding for UNRWA, Politico reported. The sheet also condemned the Council's position on Israel. Under the executive order, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio must review and report to the White House regarding any international organizations, treaties, or conventions which "promote radical or anti-American sentiment." Annapolis, MD - Feb. 3, 2025  - Maryland was dubbed “most improved” in a new report grading state policies to combat tobacco use among residents, due in part to new laws that raised the state tax on cigarettes and included e-cigarettes in the state’s Clean Indoor Air Act last year. But there is still room to improve, according to the American Lung Association. “Maryland did a couple of really great and strong policy things last year,” said Aleks Casper, the association’s advocacy director for Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and Washington, D.C. “But the report highlights that there is more work to be done … That report is a snapshot, so we need to make sure to protect the progress that we’ve made.” The annual State of T...
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday that proposed 25% tariffs to be levied by the US will be put on hold for 30 days following a phone call with President Trump. “I just had a good call with President Trump,” Trudeau said in a post on X. “Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. US President Donald Trump spoke with reporters in the Oval Office on Monday afternoon about a variety of issues including Israel and the chances of the ceasefire holding. Based on a previous statement about Israel's size, the President was asked if he would support the annexation of Judea and Samaria by Israel. While he did not answer the question directly, he said: "It certainly is a small country in terms of land." He demonstrated how small Israel is compared to the rest of the region using his pen. "It's a pretty small piece of land, and it's amazing that they've been able to do what they've been able to do when you think about it. There's a lot of good, smart brainpower, but it is a very small piece of land," he added. Trump was also asked about the cha...

Mexico will send 10,000 National Guard troops to its northern border to help reduce the flow of fentanyl into the US, reinforce the border, and help improve security in its own territory, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said. “For humanitarian reasons, we must help the United States address its fentanyl consumption crisis, which is leading to overdose deaths,” she said at her morning news conference Monday. This comes as President Donald Trump and Sheinbaum earlier on Monday announced a deal to delay tariffs by a month after Mexico agreed to place the soldiers at the border. Sheinbaum also noted that the US, for the first time, has agreed to work together to prevent high-powered weapons from entering Mexico. “I believe this is a very important aspect of ...
