This week we read the Admonition, the slew of curses that will befall our nation if we do not adhere to the Torah. The total number of curses enumerated is oddly listed in Midrash as being 'one hundred less two'.  The Kli Yakar explains this anomaly by observing that there are ninety-eight curses clearly defined among the verses, and two that are not exactly described. Also, the Lord will bring upon you every disease and plague that are, לא כתוב — not written in this ספר תורה —Torah scroll, to destroy you.  (דברים כח סא) The nature of the disease and plague is not specified, in contrast with the other ninety-eight consequences which are clearly detailed. Why is this significant? More intriguing is the Torah depicting these tr...

A Message from Rabbi Silber: August 26, 2026 To my beloved Kehilla, It’s overwhelming to contemplate how quickly time passes. When Aviva and I arrived in Baltimore over 23 years ago, we were a young, growing family, and the Shul was navigating the loss of Rabbi Ervin Preis zt’l who led this Kehilla for twenty-five beautiful years. Since that fateful day in August, over two decades ago, we have built something beautiful together. Together we have built more than just a Shul, more than just a Kehilla, we have built a family. And what a beautiful family it is. We are a family of diverse backgrounds and life circumstances. We are a family who learns, davens, and grows together. We are a family who leans on each other in times of difficulty and rejoices and dances with one anot...

In Sefer Dvarim, we are treated to one of several places where Hashem uses a particular term of endearment for B’nei Yisroel, referring to us as the “Am Segulah”, a treasured nation (Vaeschanan, 7:6, Re’ei,14:2 and Ki Savo 26:18).  There are a myriad of other places where B’nei Yisroel are referred to as the “Am Hanivchar” – the “chosen people” (Vaeschanan, 4:37), Hashem’s “children” (Re’eh, 14:1-2) and even Hashem’s “first born” (Shemos, 4:22),.  What is the meaning of this special status?  Contemporary scientists would scream that there are no superior genome by race, class or ethnicity – and they may be right.  But consider, Since the dawn of th...
