Drivers Advised to Use Caution During Today's Afternoon Storms

(June 19, 2017) – A severe weather alert has been issued for the afternoon rush hour and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is urging motorists to use extreme caution. Damaging wind gusts and flash flooding is expected to begin in western Maryland by 1 p.m. and hit central Maryland by 4 p.m. The threat is expected to continue into the evening and diminish by 9 p.m.

Here are some things to remember for severe weather events:

• Use low-beam headlights when windshield wipers are being used
• Delay trips during severe weather
• Avoid driving through standing water – “don’t drown, go around”
• Be aware that high winds may cause downed trees and power lines
• Remember to buckle up
