Britain’s Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis met with Pope Francis in Rome and subsequently praised him as a “truly outstanding and inspirational spiritual leader.”

When he met with the Pope, the Chief Rabbi was accompanied by Cardinal Vincent Nichols, who is president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.

So what did the Chief Rabbi give the Pope during the meeting? He presented him with a Rosh HaShana “Apple and Honey” package. He explained that the gift represents bitterness experienced in the past, and the hope of moving forward in a “sweet manner”. He said that “expression of our thoughts as regards the background to our visit and how, thanks to Nostra Aetate, we are moving very much forward.”

Nostra Aetate was the document where the Vatican repealed thousands of years of official anti-Semitism. The fiftieth anniversary of this document is approaching this October 28th.
