Baltimore, MD - Sept. 22, 2015 - Erev Yom Kippur 5776 - The Star-K offers these Yom Tov Alerts and Reminders:

1. Shabbos & Holiday Mode Ovens

Please note that if you have an oven with Sabbath Mode, the Sabbath Mode features do not in any way circumvent the regular restrictions involved in food preparation on Shabbos Kodesh.  The laws of Bishul, Havarah, Shehiyah and Chazarah must still be observed even when using a Sabbath Mode oven. (Fit more information please see memo regarding oven use at http://www.star-k.com/cons-appl-memo.htm)

2. STAR-K Schach Certification

Please note that schach mats are certified by the Star-K only when the letter of certification is attached, and require placement according to the instructions in the letter. STAR-K does not take responsibility for any other schach. For more information please see http://www.star-k.org/schach.

3. Schach Infestation

Stored improperly, schach can become a target and breeding ground for insects. These insects could then drop onto the table and into your food.

If you are concerned your schach may be infested, take advantage of some sunny days before Sukkos to dry it out. Unroll it and leave it out in the hot sun. A few days of exposure to the dry heat, followed by shaking the schach out, will rid the schach of possible insect problems.
