A Virginia State Trooper has died after he was shot Friday evening after approaching a vehicle.

He and several Richmond Police Department officers were conducting high visibility patrols in the Mosby Court public housing complex due to a recent trend of shootings and other crime. The officers were approaching a vehicle parked facing the wrong direction on Redd Street. As they spoke to the two occupants of the vehicle the passenger opened fire on them, striking Special Agent Walter.

Walter, succumbed to his injuries shortly after 5 a.m. today at VCU Medical Center.

State police said a Richmond man, Travis A. Ball, 27, is in custody after an overnight search by local, state and federal law enforcement agents.

Ball was apprehended at a home in Northumberland County shortly after 6 a.m. and is being held without bond. He was charged on warrants obtained Friday on one count of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Police said additional charges are pending.

State Police said the incident happened just after 7:30 p.m.

Sources indicate that the trooper was shot during a traffic stop.

Governor Terry McAuliffe identified the trooper as Mike Walter in a tweet at about 10:20 p.m. Friday evening in which he asked for prayers for the trooper and said Walter is “fighting for his life.”

Reports indicate that one suspect struggled with the trooper and shot him, before fleeing the scene on foot. The suspect is described as a black male, 5’8” to 5’10” tall, 18 to 20 year old, with short hair, no facial hair, wearing red shirt.
