Baltimore, MD - Dec. 14, 2017 - Students at Cheder Chabad of Baltimore have been eagerly awaiting Chanukah for months. Starting as early as October the students have been busy creating posters, menorahs and various other Chanukah-themed projects. On Tuesday, December 12 the Chanukah fervor culminated in a Chanukah Science and Math Fair organized by Mrs. Chani Tenenbaum.

Cheder Chabad believes strongly in integrating their general studies with Torah and Yiddishkeit.  They therefore focus on connecting the materials they learnt with upcoming Yomim Tovim, Halachos they learn, and other Torah concepts.  One way in which this is exemplified is with the Chanukah math and science fair.  Mrs. Tenenbaum relates, "each class brainstormed and designed both a math project and a science project relating to Chanukah. The classes learned the relevant materials and then were able to see it come to life through a Yiddishe perspective."

Math related projects included a Chanukah cookies bake sales to learn the value of money, a class created version of the popular game Math 24! remade to Latke 25!,  different types of graphs, estimating, and interactive board games.  Science projects included experimenting with yeast and sugar to produce delicious donuts, underwater menorahs,  Chanukah-themed simple machines, lava lamps made with oil, density exploration with oil and other liquids, and the creation of a steam powered spinning dreidel.

The students ran the booths for their fellow students as well as their families and others who came to see the beautiful event. The students also had time to mill around and examine their friends’ booths and buy some delicious hot chocolate and cookies, (courtesy of the fourth grade bake sale) to which all the proceeds went to tzedakah.

On display was also the creative hand-made Menorahs that the students made as a part of the world-wide Tzivos Hashem Menorah Contest.  The contest challenged the kids to use creative ideas and materials to create a theme-related Menorah with a message to encourage others to embrace the mitzvoth of Chanukah and the Menorah.  The ingenuity of the children in creating their Menorahs was astounding, as each Menorah portrayed a beautiful message through creative materials. Congratulations to Leibel Druk of Cheder Chabad’s seventh grade, won the world wide contest with the theme, “ Help your Base Strike the Yetzer Hara.”(See Picture)

At the end of the day, many of the students hopped on a bus downtown to join in on the grand Menorah Lighting celebration in McKeldin Square.  It was an exciting and educational day for all the students at Cheder Chabad, where students enjoyed being able to see what they learned come to life.
