Baltimore, MD - October 16, 2017 - Despite the late notice, hundreds of people from across the Baltimore community joined in the Tehilim gathering held, last evening, in the Bais Yaakov of Baltimore High School Auditorium--and via conference call with over 700 calls from all over US, Canada and Eretz Yisroel—as a zechus for a refuah shlaimah for Rabbi Mendel Don Freedman (Menachem Mendel Don ben Chana Serel). Rabbi Freedman is the former beloved principal and was the guiding force of Bais Yaakov’s Elementary School for 37 years, until his retirement last year.

Bais Yaakov of Baltimore High School principal, Rabbi Yechezkel Zweig introduced HaRav Yaakov Hopfer, who spoke prior to the recital of the Tehilim, led by various Rabbonim.

HaRav Hopfer announced that Rabbi Freedman is someone who presently needs rachmei shamayim, a nes. Yet, as mentioned in the Gemorah, you can’t daven for a nes for an individual. The Rav clarified that a person is not allowed to daven for a nes for an individual, but for a rabbim, you are permitted to ask for a nes.

“I think, and genuinely so, there is such a thing as a rabbim—a large group of people—and then, there is an individual that can make a rabbim, and that person can fall into the category of a rabbim,” explained HaRav Hopfer. “Our choleh has inspired thousands of young women to go on and to become bnos Yisroel…inspired them personally, and inspired the teachers to inspire their talmidos. He falls into a category of a rabbim and you are allowed to ask.

“Dovid Hamelech sang his song of Tehilim and pleaded and poured out his heart and soul to the Ribono shel Olam, as an individual,” continued HaRav Hopfer. “But, Tehilim was written with ruach haKodesh, and it was written for every one of us….these are not Dovid’s words that we are saying, these are our words that we are saying. You put yourself in the place of Dovid Hamelech and it is you speaking to the Ribono shel Olam.”

HaRav Hopfer elaborated, saying that sometimes a choleh doesn’t have a way of davening for himself, and when we daven for a choleh, we are in his place.

“When a person davens to the Ribono shel Olam, when you pour out your heart to somebody who you love, your emotions and feelings, and you talk to the person in your own language in what lies in your heart, you feel cleansed and you feel purified,” concludes HaRav Hopfer. “Whatever happens with these tefilos, these are tefilos that belong to Reb Mendel and they cleanse him and purify him. The Ribono shel Olam should help him and hear our tefilos. They should make a mark in shomayim. Our tefilos never return empty-handed. The Ribono shel Olam accepts every genuine tefilah. Let us pour out our hearts to the Ribono shel Olam for Reb Menachem Mendel Don ben Chana Serel.

HaRav Hopfer concluded by saying that today, Tuesday, another choleh, Mr. Yossi Ryback, is scheduled to undergo a kidney transplant, and we should add a tefilah for Yosef Elozer Yaakov ben Rivka Leah, for a refuah shelaima.
