A number of number of Kosher catering companies from across the US are heading down to Houston to provide free food to Jews who were affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Former Baltimorean Chaim Goldfeder,  from Texas Kosher BBQ said in a video he posted on Facebook that he and his team will travel to Houston on Sunday and station themselves on the campus of the Robert M. Beren Academy — a Jewish primary and secondary school. He said he expected to serve more than 1,000 meals a day to Jewish residents of Houston and would stay in the city for a few weeks.

The video also shows the supplies Goldfeder will be taking down with him to Houston — including cups, water bottles, pasta and rice. He said, “We’re not sure what’s there or what we have access to so we’re bringing everything down with us, from diesel fuel to regular fuel.” Volunteers also helped in the kitchen by making hamburgers that Goldfeder will freeze before taking them to Houston.

Goldfeder added that kosher distributors also donated meat and poultry to help him with his efforts to serve the Houston Jewish community.

Another catering company in Dallas, SIMCHA Kosher Catering, sent a truck full of food to Houston for Shabbat, and the owner of South Side Sandwich Shop & Smokehouse in Lakewood, NJ changed his store hours so he could travel to Houston and help Goldfeder cook and distribute food for a few days. Another team, from Jewel Kosher Catering in Michigan, will meet Goldfeder in Houston and also help.

Goldfeder said it will cost the groups over $5,000 a day to stay in Houston for two to three weeks. Anyone interesting in donating money to help with the costs can contact the non-profit organization Dallas Kosher, email Goldfeder directly at pitmaster@texaskosherbbq.com or call 972-404-8980.
