Maryland gubernatorial candidate and former NAACP leader Ben Jealous was arrested during a protest outside the White House on Tuesday.

Kevin Harris, a campaign spokesman, said in an email that Jealous participated in an immigrant rights rally hosted by Maryland and Washington advocacy groups in support of the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Jealous spoke at the event and led a march around the White House before he was taken into custody by United States Park Police.

"His actions today are consistent with his life-long work as a civil rights leader and community organizer, including his successful efforts to steer passage of the Maryland Dream Act," Harris said.

DACA marked its fifth anniversary Tuesday, but its fate under President Donald Trump remains unclear. The program shields youth from deportation and allows them access to higher education and jobs.

CASA executive director Gustavo Torres and Illinois Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez were also among the 25 arrested, according to a CASA release.

“We are showing that we will get arrested today so that we can raise awareness and allow every single one of our DACA youths and TPS recipients to freely work and pursue their dreams," Torres said in a statement.
