Baltimore County authorities closed a number of central arteries in Towson on Tuesday due to a broken gas main.

Joppa Road remains closed to vehicular traffic between the Towson roundabout and Fairmount Avenue. Earlier, Virginia Avenue between Joppa Road and Pennsylvania Avenue were closed, and all the buildings in the area bounded by York Road, East Joppa Road, Virginia Avenue and East Pennsylvania Avenue were evacuated. Those buildings included the Cinemark theater at Towson Square and a number of restaurants.

LIVE TRAFFIC UPDATES

The line was apparently broken by a work crew operating in the area around 11:30 a.m. BGE crews were able to shut of the broken gas main around 12:50 p.m.

As soon as the natural gas dissipates, the evacuations will be lifted.
