Baltimore, MD – Aug. 7, 2017 - What sort of event would warrant a response from Baltimore’s bomb disposal unit, SWAT team, mobile crime lab, a whole class of police cadets, and Chaverim of Baltimore? Nothing less than Emergency Responders Fair at JCC’s Camp Koolanu. Chaverim joined with the rest of Baltimore’s finest to teach campers about safety and emergency response, as well as to demonstrate the JCC’s overall appreciation for first responders, especially in response to threats over the past year.

Chaverim came with their emergency response truck, codenamed SV1, to highlight the extensive equipment Chaverim members are trained to use, and to model how to respond to a call. Dispatchers Sara D. and Naomi M. explained the Chaverim service to campers, while responders Moshe G., Shloimie K., and Gershon B. actually demonstrated how to unlock and open someone’s car, a method known as “pop-a-lock.” The campers aged 4-10 got to participate in the Chaverim demonstration, holding the equipment nearby for the responders to use, and opening the car door once the responder unlocked it. A number of campers proudly shared their own experiences when parents and other family members called Chaverim.

Chaverim provides emergency response with a pop-a-lock when children are locked in cars, as well as children locked in homes or rooms. Other services Chaverim volunteers provide regularly are jumpstarting cars when the battery dies, changing flat tires, checking and correcting tire air pressure, bringing gasoline when a car runs out on the road, opening a home when a resident gets locked out, and directing traffic during weather emergencies. Even if it is not one of these everyday services, all calls will be answered by a friendly dispatcher, and Chaverim will try to help however they are able.
