Updated as of Apr. 24, 2017 - In an update to the events of last night…

We confirm that the Chevrolet Impala that was carjacked at about 3:23 P.M. at Bancroft and Park Heights and which was later used in the 8:10 PM carjacking, was later recovered within a few blocks of where the suspects tried to evade officers.

Of the three suspects in the carjackings, one was caught. He is 16 years old, and was just arrested 3 weeks ago for armed robbery. Police had thought he was still in jail. We now understand that this person and his associates were involved in at least three of the four carjackings from Saturday night to Sunday evening.

In less positive news, there was a vehicle theft at 4:00 AM on the 23rd from the 6200 block of Wallis, and a van was stolen around 7:30 PM near the corner of Park Heights and Parkington (the new Kollel).

Here is the timeline from the Wallis theft, as recreated from the homeowner's camera footage:

Time line:

3:45 - 3:49
Suspects walk northbound on Wallis from Taney.
Enter two cars and rummage around.
    Continue walking north on Wallis.
3:55
Car comes out of alley one house above 6200 Wallis and turns south,
passes 6200, and left (east) on Pinkney. Possibly connected

to suspects.

     3:59
Two suspects walking south on Wallis return to one car again

and steal it.

Below is a picture of the two suspects stealing the car.

Baltimore, MD - Apr. 23, 2017 - As you know, our community has been going through a rash of carjackings - by this afternoon, there were at least three carjackings in our neighborhood within the last 24 hours.

Baltimore City Councilman Yitzy Schleifer was made aware of these crimes, and he became directly involved. He contacted Baltimore City Police, and requested an increase in patrols in this area, and the Major agreed to relocate an entire unit, called the "Dirtbike Task Force" closer to our area.

So when, tonight, a fourth carjacking took place, the police were ready. Councilman Schleifer was able to coordinate Shomrim and police, and ensure that the police helicopter was nearby and able to launch over the area at very short notice.

This is what happened over the past 70 minutes.

About 8:10 PM tonight, 3 black males walked up to a man on the 3200 block of Szold, punched him, asked for his car keys, and took his car - a 2011 Silver Hyundai Elantra hatchback. At least one of the thieves was wearing a grey hoodie.

A Shomrim unit saw the car crossing Northern Parkway. He followed the car, watching it meet up with another car that was carjacked earlier today - the one on Bancroft near Park Heights. It seems that the car that was jacked earlier today was used to procure the Hyundai.

The unit kept other Shomrim units and Councilman Schleifer informed, and he patched in the Police at the highest levels. Major Richard Gibson, Northern District commander and Councilman Schleifer were relaying the real time information.

The cars drove together, but were unaware that they were being followed, or that dozens of police officers, tipped off by the trailing Shomrim unit, were in pursuit. They drove on Coldspring, crossing the JFX, N Charles, and were approaching York Road when, in a dramatic finish, Baltimore City Police stopped both cars. The carjackers bailed out and started running. Police caught at least two of them, and have them in custody.  The third perpetrator made his getaway, but on foot. We very much hope that these cars (and perhaps others!) can be returned to their owners quickly.

We are hopeful that the arrest of these men will directly lead to a significant improvement in safety. And we commend all the Shomrim units who played an active role, Councilman Schleifer, and Baltimore City Police for their yeoman efforts!
