Potential Risks under Bridges to be Removed

(Hanover, MD) - Following the fire and bridge collapse on I-85 in Atlanta caused by highly flammable material stored under a bridge, the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is proactively identifying and relocating any similar material stored under a state-owned bridge.

“MDOT is doing everything we can to protect the safety of Marylanders as they use our road network to connect them to life’s opportunities,” said Transportation Secretary Pete K. Rahn.  “We are committed to taking every step possible to prevent what happened in Atlanta from happening here in Maryland.”

Beginning this week, MDOT deployed crews across the state to identify and remove any potentially flammable or combustible materials under Maryland’s 2,564 state-owned bridges.  This effort is expected to continue for several weeks.
