Baltimore, MD - Mar. 23, 2017 - On March 1, after over 37 years of being family owned and operated, Milford Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Baltimore, has been sold to a New Jersey-based company. Starting June 1st, the renamed facility, King David Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, will become STAR-K kosher certified, offering new long-term and short-term nursing and rehab care services options in a frum-friendly environment.

“The psychological aspect of healing is important to consider, too,” believes King David Nursing and Rehabilitation Center administrator Yitzy Tendler. “If a person has a homemade kosher meal, rather than an airline meal, that can really help a person get well faster.”

In addition to offering hot, freshly prepared STAR-K certified meals, King David hopes to revitalize its shul by drawing local yeshiva students to help make an Orthodox minyan, every Shabbos, to give residents—Orthodox or not—a sense of belonging to a community. It is also in the planning stages of making renovations to a house on the facility’s property that it is turning into a bikur cholim house to host family members of residents who live a distance away or out of town.

King David utilizes support nurses and educators to increase the medical cases it can handle, filling a void that exists in Baltimore for handling them in a proper environment for the observant patient. It has also teamed up with local doctors that are most popularly used in Baltimore’s frum community.

“Usually, when a person goes into a nursing home or rehab center, they are assigned a doctor, unless their personal primary care physician can see them at the facility,” notes Tendler. “Often, they cannot follow their patients when they enter a nursing home, simply because they are not credentialed. When residents are already comfortable with their doctor and a continuum of care is provided, the quality of that care will improve.”

“The STAR-K is proud to work with King David, which strives to offer the highest level of care, to enable patients to enjoy the highest level of Kosher certified food options, as well,” says STAR-K President Avrom Pollak. “We wish Mr. Tendler and the entire staff of King David much success and welcome this addition to our community.”
