Urgent Traffic Alert for Delaware Memorial Bridge

Traffic has consistently been backed up heading southbound across the Delaware Memorial Bridge due to emergency construction work.

The two left lanes of the southbound span are closed for suspender rope construction work, leaving the far right lane working lane for traffic, according to the Delaware River and Bay Authority.

The emergency construction work is expected to affect traffic for the next few days including Erev Yom Tov.

The issue was noticed during normal inspections and engineers determined the cables connecting the roadway to the bridge driving deck needed to be replaced immediately.

Travelers are advised to use Exit 13 on I-295 southbound in New Jersey or use Exit 2 on the New Jersey Turnpike 2 to Route 322 Westbound as an alternative route.

Despite the warning drivers are reporting traffic jams of up to three hours and those using the Commodore Barry Bridge near Chester Pennsylvania as an alternate route are also seeing delays.

It may be in the best interest of drivers to start using the Walt Whitman Bridge, if possible, to avoid the large backup
