Baltimore officials are expected to launch a new car-sharing program in the next few months to ease congestion and parking woes in crowded areas.

Peter Little, head of the Baltimore City Parking Authority, tells the Baltimore Sun the program will allow drivers to take one-way trips anywhere and drop off the vehicles at any metered spots or public parking spaces within city limits.

Little says the program was modeled after those in Denver and the District of Columbia. The idea is for drivers to rent the cars online and pay by the minute.

The Parking Authority says it wants to select a vendor to provide 200 vehicles sometime next year. Officials estimate that for every car shared, there will be 15 fewer privately used cars on the road.
