The head of a prominent Israeli think tank said on Tuesday that optimism among politicians and IDF brass in relation to next week’s peace negotiations in Kazakhstan to end the Syrian civil war was “warranted but exaggerated.” Prof. Efraim Karsh, director of the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar-Ilan University, was responding to a report in the London-based pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat claiming that Israel is confidant that its interests will be represented at the Astana summit by Russia. According to the report, by Tel Aviv correspondent Nazir Majli, this sense of security was born out of the “positive relations” between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the ...

WASHINGTON — President Obama on Tuesday largely commuted the remaining prison sentence of Chelsea Manning, the army intelligence analyst convicted of an enormous 2010 leak that revealed American military and diplomatic activities across the world, disrupted the administration, and made WikiLeaks, the recipient of those disclosures, famous. The decision by Mr. Obama rescued Ms. Manning, who twice tried to commit suicide last year, from an uncertain future as a transgender woman incarcerated at the male military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. She has been jailed for nearly seven years, and her 35-year sentence was by far the longest punishment ever imposed in the United States for a leak conviction. Now, under the terms of Mr. Obama’s commutation announced by the Whit...

The organizer of an anti-Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) conference being held next week at the European Parliament in Brussels told The Algemeiner that the groundbreaking event seeks to “unclog the gears” of the movement’s influence on the continent. Dafna Friedman — communications and campaigns officer of the advocacy group Europe Israel Public Affairs (EIPA) — said that activists participating in “Israel: Include. Invest. Involve” aim to “debunk false claims about the Jewish state, and show clear democratic support for upgrading relations with Israel.” “The conversation between Israelis and Europeans is currently stuck between reverse and first gear, mainly because of ...
The United Kingdom’s Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn is calling for an investigation into Israeli “interference” in the British government. The call by Corbyn, whose party has been dogged by allegations of anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism, came following a four-part documentary by Al Jazeera. In the documentary, an undercover reporter filmed an Israeli embassy employee, Shai Masot, discussing his intention to “take down” several British politicians, including Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Alan Duncan, and calling Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson an “idiot.” Following the report, Corbyn wrote to U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May that the so-called Israeli influence “undermines the integrity of our democracy.” &ld...
Washington (CNN) Donald Trump will become president Friday with an approval rating of just 40%, according to a new CNN/ORC Poll, the lowest of any recent president and 44 points below that of President Barack Obama, the 44th president. Following a tumultuous transition period, approval ratings for Trump's handling of the transition are more than 20 points below those for any of his three most recent predecessors. Obama took the oath in 2009 with an 84% approval rating, 67% approved of Clinton's transition as of late December 1992 and 61% approved of George W. Bush's transition just before he took office in January 2001. Trump's wobbly handling of the presidential transition has left most Americans with growing doubts that the President-elect will be able to h...
Baltimore, MD - January 17, 2017- When Seven Mile Market owner, Hershel Boehm, opened his mail earlier this month, the last thing he expected was a “musar sefer” in the form of a letter written by a young child. Apparently, while the parent he/she accompanied to the store was shopping, he/she was doing his/her own shopping….except, they skipped the checkout process. Once home, presumably, the parent saw that the child possessed an item that was not paid for. The parents taught their child that the right thing to do would be to own up to the transgression and pay for it. Mr. Boehm was touched by this gesture and Seven Mile Market is so proud of both the child and the parents for doing the right thing. Mi k’amcha Yisrael, and mi k’amcha Baltimore!!!   ...
