Washington - Memory loss may not always be the first warning sign that dementia is brewing — changes in behavior or personality might be an early clue. Researchers on Sunday outlined a syndrome called “mild behavioral impairment” that may be a harbinger of Alzheimer’s or other dementias, and proposed a checklist of symptoms to alert doctors and families. Losing interest in favorite activities? Getting unusually anxious, aggressive or suspicious? Suddenly making crude comments in public? “Historically those symptoms have been written off as a psychiatric issue, or as just part of aging,” said Dr. Zahinoor Ismail of the University of Calgary, who presented the checklist at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Toronto. Most of us have probably experienced a flash of recognition at one point or another that we owe someone an immense debt of gratitude for having changed our lives in some significant way. Often times, however, that recognition comes long after the fact – even a half century or more – and it may no longer be possible to express our hakaros hatov. After a leil Shabbos speech in Philadelphia last November a woman approached me and asked me if I remembered her. She then told me her name. Not only did I remember her, I even remembered her class rank in high school, which says a lot about how competitive our high school was. In Nancy's case, we not only went to high school together, but college as well, though I doubt we spoke five times throughout college. I did know, however,...
NY/PA - July 24, 2016 - Over 1,000 high school-aged kids spending their summer at Jewish camps in the Pocono and Catskill mountains in Pennsylvania and New York were given a valuable lesson in political discourse this week, learning about the BDS movement and what they can do to help fight against it. And after they heard the presentation, they wanted more. “In one camp, the kids complained beforehand because this was their time for playing ball,” said former member of Knesset Dov Lipman, director of Public Diplomacy in the Vice Chairman's office of the World Zionist Organization. “But when it was over, I was stunned - we told the campers that they were free to leave, but that we would stay behind if they wanted to continue the discussion. In some camps, almost the ...
Washington - A massive leak of Democratic leadership e-mails has sent the party reeling into its national convention this week, with aides to Hillary Clinton, its presumptive presidential nominee, accusing Russia of coordinating the attack. Robby Mook, campaign manager for Hillary for America, accused Moscow on Sunday of deliberately helping Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump by directly orchestrating the hack, which resulted in the release of roughly 20,000 e-mails by Wikileaks, a whistleblower organization founded by Julian Assange, on Friday. Several of those e-mails reveal an apparent bias within the Democratic National Committee for Clinton during her primary campaign against Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont, who for months claimed the process...

(CNN) Debbie Wasserman Schultz is stepping down as chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee at the end of the party's convention, which is set to begin here Monday. The Florida congresswoman's resignation -- under pressure from top Democrats -- comes amid hackers' release of emails that show DNC staffers favoring Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders in the party's 2016 nominating contest. Wasserman Schultz announced her resignation in a statement Sunday afternoon, saying she remains committed to seeing Clinton elected president. She talked with both President Barack Obama and Clinton before making her announcement. "Going forward, the best way for me to accomplish those goals is to step down as Party Chair at the end of this convention," Wasse...
New York - Verizon Communications Inc will announce an agreement on Monday to buy Yahoo Inc for about $5 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter. The announcement will come before the start of New York trading hours, the source added. The deal will end months of uncertainty about Yahoo’s future after the company announced plans to review strategic alternatives in February. Yahoo was not immediately available, and Verizon declined to comment. Bloomberg first reported that the deal will be announced Monday for $4.8 billion. Reuters reported on Friday that Verizon had emerged as the front-runner in the Yahoo auction.
Jewish Home, United Torah Judaism surge past Zionist Union, Yesh Atid pulls into statistical dead-heat with Likud. Less than two months after Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu secured the support of Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu party, expanding his coalition from 61 to 67 seats, a new poll shows a dramatic shift in support – and the possibility of a Lapid-led government. The poll, conducted by Geocartographia for Kol HaZman, shows support for the current coalition fairly stable, with the six coalition members winning a combined 68 seats in the poll, compared to the 67 they currently hold. Nevertheless, the survey showed a dramatic shift of support between coalition members and among opposition parties. The ruling Likud party would, according to the poll, plumm...
Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s newly-announced running mate, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, has a history of embracing Islamists. He appointed a Hamas supporter to a state immigration commission; spoke at a dinner honoring a Muslim Brotherhood terror suspect; and received donations from well-known Islamist groups. Appointing a Muslim Brotherhood Front Leader Who Supports Hamas In 2007, Kaine was the Governor of Virginia and, of all people, chose Muslim American Society (MAS) President Esam Omeish to the state’s Immigration Commission. A Muslim organization against Islamism criticized the appointment and reckless lack of vetting. Federal prosecutors said in a 2008 court filing that MAS was “founded as the overt arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in Amer...
Washington - President Barack Obama says GOP nominee Donald Trump’s recent suggestion that the U.S. might not come to the defense of NATO allies is another sign of Trump’s “lack of preparedness” on foreign policy. Obama said in an interview broadcast Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that Trump’s comments to the New York Times — in which Trump suggested allies that haven’t paid their NATO dues wouldn’t be guaranteed of getting help if Russia invaded — were an admission that the U.S. might not live by NATO’s “most central tenet.” Obama, speaking before the Democratic National Convention begins Monday, said Trump’s comments on NATO last week were “an indication of the lack of prepa...
Philadelphia - Thousands of demonstrators are taking to Philadelphia’s sweltering streets Sunday, chanting and beating drums in the first major protests ahead of the Democratic National Convention, as the city wilts during a heat wave. Throngs of clean energy activists jammed a major thoroughfare in their mile-long march from Philadelphia’s City Hall to Independence Mall, near the Liberty Bell. They held anti-fracking and anti-pipeline signs, some with illustrations like a train surrounded by a fireball and the words “No Exploding Trains.” Others held “Bernie or Bust” signs. Sam Miller, 82, traveled from Erie, Pennsylvania, to join the march that stretched several blocks and across a wide street as temperatures in the city soared into the mid-...
Atlanta - Hillary Clinton should be in jail. Donald Trump threatens America’s very existence. These are not fringe opinions. They are widespread views across the nation’s bitter political divide. That means that on Nov. 9, the morning after Election Day, tens of millions of Americans will awaken to the realization that someone they loathe will be the 45th president of the United States. The dynamics of the race, more ominous than the usual rough-and-tumble of politics, leave many Republicans and Democrats worried that many voters will be unwilling to accept the outcome. That could weaken the new president from the very first day in office. Intense, sustained opposition diminishes a president’s political capital and emboldens opposition lawmakers who have to ans...

The 14th of Tammuz marked  his 29th Yahrzeit and several days later, the 17th of Tammuz marked the 17th yahrzeit of his successor, Rav Shmuel Yaakov Weinberg, zt”l. Each year, the yeshiva invites prominent alumni to speak to current students and alumni so that they too can absorb some of the life lessons gained by those who were privileged to be close talmidim of the Roshei Hayeshiva, zicronom livrocho. On July 13, Rabbi Simcha Soloveitchik, shlita, addressed a Seudas Siyum and gave over vibrantly and with enthusiasm the legacy and mesorah of the Rosh Hayeshiva, Rav Ruderman, ,zt”l. Jerusalem -  Culture and Sport Minister Miri Regev announced that she would not attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro as she did not want to violate the Sabbath. “Miri Regev has a problem with violating the Sabbath as a representative of the State of Israel,”  said her spokeswoman. “She herself does not keep Sabbath, but when she represents all of Israel’s citizens, she does not want to offend religious citizens by violating the Sabbath.” The ceremony was scheduled to end on Friday night, and the distance back to Regev’s hotel—an hour-long drive—rendered walking back impossible. “We appealed to the Israel Olympic Committee in an effort to find a hotel closer to the ceremony that would al...
Philadelphia - Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said he plans to endorse Hillary Clinton , citing his distaste for GOP candidate Donald Trump, the New York Times reported. The decision comes after the businessman expressed uncertainty as to who he would endorse, saying in May that he was “not sure” on what he was going to do. Bloomberg decided earlier this year not to pursue the White House as an independent, and in announcing that decision blasted Trump for running “the most divisive and demagogic presidential campaign I can remember.” “Threatening to bar foreign Muslims from entering the country is a direct assault on two of the core values that gave rise to our nation: religious tolerance and the separation of church and state,&rdquo...
Washington -  Former Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders said Sunday he would have preferred to see Hillary Clinton select someone like Senator Elizabeth Warren for the vice presidential spot over Senator Tim Kaine. “I have known Tim Kaine for a number of years…Tim is a very, very smart guy. He is very nice guy,” Sanders said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “He is more conservative than I am. Would I have preferred to see somebody like an Elizabeth Warren selected by Secretary Clinton? Yes, I would have.”
Recently, someone asked me a shaylah that involves what is probably one of the most heart-breaking issues I was ever asked. The question was: “Are there any halachic issues involved in sifting through the earth removed by the Waqf from the Makom HaMikdash?” To explain this shaylah, I will first explain what has happened, then discuss the halachic issues involved — and finally explain the answers. There is also a fascinating halachic-architectural issue that I noticed while studying photographs of the Moslem construction, which I will discuss at the end of this article. During the past many years, the Waqf, the Moslem “Trust” that controls the holiest place on earth, the Har HaBayis, has been making major “renovations” there, including the constru...
Baltimore, MD  Daily Dvar Halacha -  July 24, 2016 /  18Tammuz 5776 - What Do I Do On The Fast?
“I thought that if I eat blueberries every day…….”. “Someone told me that if I eat only twice a day, I will surely lose weight”.  “I heard chocolate is good for you so I started eating 70% dark chocolate, a whole bar a day to help my heart health”.  “I started grazing instead of eating fixed meals so my metabolism will get faster”.  These are but a small sample of what I hear from people day in and day out.  We have more access to health news and in particular news about nutrition and weight loss than we have ever had.  The problem is that not everything we read or see is based on science.  Although people have the best of intentions, much of what we might hear has very little basis in terms of scie...
Washington - Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is asserting that countries like France that he says are compromised by terrorism may be subjected to the “extreme vetting” he proposes as a deterrent to attacks in the U.S. When asked if his proposal might lead to a point when not a lot of people from overseas are allowed into the U.S., Trump said, “Maybe we get to that point” and added: “We have to be smart and we have to be vigilant and we have to be strong.” In an interview to air Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Trump also rejected suggestions that his stance on requiring NATO members to pay their share was a mistake; defended Fox News founder Roger Ailes, who left the network amid accusations of sexual harassmen...
